I don't know what it is about travelers, but they all seem awesome. So far, whenever we meet other folks our age, we seem to get into long conversations about each other's travels, where we're from, and so forth. We've met Australians, Canadians, Americans, Romanians, Finns, Britons, Hungarians, and more. Everyone has his own story to tell, everyone's interested in hearing ours, and everyone is really friendly in general.
The nice thing about meeting these strangers in strange lands is how quickly acquaintances become friends. Whether we bond simply through the circumstances of our common situation, or because of common interests, etc., it's interesting to see what new people bring to the table. Some folks have been places we're going and can offer advice and suggestions about what to see or how to behave, and we share our (so far) limited knowledge of the places we've been.
For example, we met an Aussie and a Canadian in the room this evening, got to talking, and wound up all heading for a walk back towards the local square (the Leidsplein) to enjoy our last (and only) taste of Dutch cuisine- french fries in mayonnaise. For 4.80 Euros, I got a big paper cone of french fries slathered in typical, fatty American-style mayo with a Coke. The thick-cut fries were fried fresh in front of us, salted, and portioned into the cones before the shopkeeper pumped a big helping of mayonnaise on the top. They were gone, and our hands were covered in mayo by the time we got back to the hostel. Delicious!
Off to bed now, as we need to be up around 6:30 to get to the station to catch our train to Brussels (for half an hour) from where we will then head to Paris for the longest stay (and possibly one of the more difficult) of our journey!
